Women's Voices From Around the World: Voice 3

Hemla Makan-Dullabh

We live in a world rich with diverse healing traditions, wisdom, and energy work, often brought to life through the unique voices of women.

This series of voices of women worldwide focuses on the holistic voices of the Feminine and the expression of the Feminine. Their stories hold the power to heal, inspire, and connect us across boundaries.

Our voice this month hails from South Africa, my home country of origin. Risha Maharaj and I have a wonderful friendship of over 19 years. We first met when she was referred to me for a session of Color Therapy, Color Therapy had a huge impact on her. Then she told me that when I teach it, she would like to learn. She was one of my first Color Therapy students, and a great friendship emerged. I first taught Color Therapy in 2006 to a small group of women in my living room in Johannesburg, South Africa.

I continue to hold workshops and courses on the deeper meaning of color, how it affects the chakra system, and how we can use color as a modality of healing and growth. I teach the Psychology of Color program, which is a year-long course. Color Therapy is a rich system for body, mind, and soul alignment.

Risha is an accomplished Color Therapy Facilitator, Reiki Master, and a great teacher, I received my Reiki certifications and Reiki master training from her in Karuna and Usui styles of Reiki.

Here is more about Risha and her healing practices.

"My name is Risha Maharaj Ramsahai, and I reside in the vibrant community of Newcastle, KZN, South Africa. Since 2002, I have dedicated my life to the practice of Reiki, becoming a master in this healing art under the guidance of my mentor, Mrs. Asharina Maharaj. Additionally, I began my journey into color therapy in 2006 with the renowned Hemla Makan Dullabh. Today, I am proud to be both a Reiki Master and Teacher, as well as an instructor in color therapy. In this piece, I will share my experience.

As a Reiki master and teacher, I have witnessed the profound effects this practice can have on individuals. Reiki sessions often involve a practitioner gently placing their hands on or near a recipient’s body, allowing energy to flow where it’s needed most. This flow promotes balance, healing, and harmony, often leading to a deep sense of peace and relaxation. Remembering that when I started this journey, any healing outside of the medical was seen as taboo.

In 2005, I lost my mum - I fell into deep depression, and it felt like I was crying all the time. Her passing—it shocked me out of my mind and left me deeply vulnerable, and I found myself in a constant state of grief. It felt as if I was crying all the time, unable to find my way through the pain.

My cousin's success with color therapy piqued my interest, so I reached out to Hemla, with whom I connected on a soul level, for my first color therapy session. Her statement, "You have the ability to make yourself sick," resonated deeply within me, prompting me to ask myself, "Why am I still crying? She's gone, and she needs to continue on her journey." I remember crying and all the ladies in the group comforting me and crying with me.

It wasn't long after that that I said to Hemla, When she runs her first class, she needs to teach me! Hemla laughed and laughed but later that year I went to Johannesburg for my first color therapy course.

Hemla helped me with the channeling of bottles and relied on her for everything color. Then she broke the news that she was leaving for America in a month—my thoughts were, "And now what do I do? How do I channel bottles? What do I do without Hemla?"

Hemla said to me, Why don't you make your own bottles? Let me teach you. She taught me how to channel and make my own bottles, and from there, my journey just grew in color!

In addition to my work with Reiki, I have found color therapy to be a powerful tool for healing and personal transformation.

Color therapy, or chromotherapy, utilizes the psychological and physiological effects of colors to balance energy and improve health.

Each color is believed to correspond with different emotions and physical conditions, making this therapy versatile and impactful.

I am deeply involved in our community, and on Women's Day, we come together to celebrate with a special meditation. Over time, men have also started to join us, embracing the feminine within the masculine—a beautiful and meaningful shift.

After our meditation, we share tea and samoosas, creating a space of warmth, connection, and reflection. It is a truly precious time, filled with love, support, and unity.

As I reflect on my journey as a Reiki master and teacher, along with my experience in color therapy, I am continually amazed by the healing potential these practices hold.

Both Reiki and color therapy offer profound benefits that can transform lives, promoting healing, balance, and well-being.

Whether you’re seeking relief from stress, emotional healing, or a deeper connection to yourself, these modalities can guide you on your path to wellness.
